October 11th-15th is Education Week on campus! Co-sponsored by Students for Education Reform, Teach for America and the USG, Education Week is a five-day long campaign to raise awareness of current issues in American public education and to empower undergraduates to take active roles in education reform. We encourage all members of the Princeton community to get involved. See the events you can attend after the article break!

May Community Service Project: Support the Troops

may_troops_mediumHere's a message from Zach Beecher, Class of 2013 President, and Marlene Morgan and Kevin Donahue, Community Service Co-Chairs:

Support the Troops Week is meant to raise awareness over the soldiers, sailors, and Marines serving overseas.  Deployments are long and often hard when away from family. By coming together and supporting the individuals who are away from their families and loved ones, we can help give them the much needed support that can help them through their deployments.  Writing one simple letter can help so much. Care packages can give them items from home that we often take for granted but are difficult to get on a deployment.  Please help do your part and write or give some support to American or British troops serving overseas. Come to Frist A Level on Friday, May 7, from 12:30 to 4:30 to write a letter, or stop by at the first floor of Frist during any time this week to donate to the troops.

kids-on-campus-mediumFor the next monthly service project from the USG/Pace Center partnership, students will have the opportunity to be paired up with kids from Princeton. The kids will be matched with a student for the day of Saturday April 24th, and will have a chance to explore Communiversity, enjoy arts and crafts, play games, and watch performances on campus. The children are from local SVC volunteer projects and are in grades K-6. Kids on Campus is a fun, one-day event open to anyone who wishes to volunteer for local Princeton youth. Communiversity is a great way for Princeton University to open its doors, and allow children to experience our campus on a personal level. To host a kid, sign up here, or email clvu@princeton.edu with any questions about the event.

On Saturday, 38 Princeton students from every class came together to enjoy the sunny spring weather and put some work in to clean up the local Delaware and Raritan Canal. The event, organized by the USG, OA, and Water Watch, was a huge success. By canoeing down the canal and carefully retrieving bag after bag of trash (even an old hockey net!), we not only had a lot of fun, we helped improve our local water quality. Other students worked to clear debris and invasive species from a local park, and everyone enjoyed some delicious ice cream afterwards.

Thanks to everyone who was able to help with the event!

Be sure to see all of the photos from the cleanup by continuing to read below the picture.

Come join Princeton Water Watch, the USG, and OA this Saturday, April 3, for an afternoon of service and fun cleaning up Princeton's D&R Canal! New Jersey water quality is among the worst in the nation, so it is up to us to preserve this vital resource and clean up our local environment. From 1:00pm to 4:00pm, we will be enjoying the spring weather (forecast predicts 80 degrees!) by canoeing along the canal to pick up trash as well as pulling up invasive species in the surrounding area.

You don't want to miss out, so sign up for the service project here, and please email Marlene Morgan, the USG Community Service Co-Chair, with any questions you might have.
