Throughout the past semester, the USG Undergraduate Life Committee (ULC) has looked into the possibility of gender neutral housing. For a while the issue was postponed, given the University's efforts on developing the four-year college system. However, in light of Butler's new dorms, discussion over gender neutral housing has resumed. After discussions with Vice President Dickerson and representatives from Housing, the ULC believes that there is a significant possibility for gender neutral housing in the near future, especially given that it would only be an option for upperclassmen (so the council of masters would not have an issue with it). Gender neutral housing would work much like substance free dorms, where certain regions of certain upperclass dorms would be designated gender neutral. The only issue remaining is whether or not there is sufficient demand for gender neutral housing from undergraduates. Next year, the USG plans to run a focus group and perhaps distribute a survey to determine student demand. All in all, Housing appears very open to the possibility if there is sufficient demand.
