Point is Offline (September 19)
Services - Outages
Written by Michael Yaroshefsky

All events and Tiger Trade items on Point have gone missing, and the cause is unknown.  We are working now to restore the events and determine the source of the problem.

Update: 3pm, Saturday
OIT will soon restore Point to a previous state.  Some information submitted to point (events, tiger trade items) since the last backup may be lost.  We are still investigating the cause.

Update: 4:30pm, Saturday
On the phone now with OIT and the Point creator, Adam Ernst.  We are in the process of restoring Point from a previous backup -- it may take a day or so for the restore to happen.  In the meantime, Point will be taken offline.  There is evidence that a hacker compromised the system.  We may be restoring Point to the state it was in a few days ago, possibly losing any changes (events, tiger trade ietms, etc.) since then.

Update: 5pm, Saturday
It looks like the hacker may not have directly caused the problem.  In response to intrusions into the server by this hacker, OIT moved the files that comprise sites like this one and Point to a new, more secure server.  During that transfer, the database files may have been corrupted, causing Tiger Trade listings, and eventually Point Events, to go missing.  Adam ran a utility to repair the files, and the utility reported that almost all of the files were corrupted but all were successfully repaired.  Therefore, we believe this to be the source of the problem and the problem to be solved.  We restarted the server and put the service back online.  During the next few days, we will monitor the site.  If you notice anything odd with Point or any other USG services, please use the Outage and Bug Report Form on the USG site.

Princeton University President Shirley M. Tilghman and Undergraduate Student Government President Connor Diemand-Yauman are establishing a task force composed of students, faculty, staff and alumni to review the relationships between the University and the eating clubs. The charge to the task force also asks it to "examine whether there are steps that can and should be taken to strengthen those relationships for the mutual benefit of the clubs and the University, and for the benefit of Princeton students and the undergraduate experience."

Free Movies at Garden Theater!

The USG has worked over the summer with the Undergraduate Film Organization (UFO), the University, and the Garden Theater to make a major upgrade to the UFO program. In past years, UFO has shown recently released and classic films in the Frist Campus Center theater. Tickets were sold at the Frist box office for $2 and UFO volunteers staffed the events.

However, due to recent student cost concerns and lagging attendance at various UFO screenings, USG and ODUS looked for a way to improve the program. After working with the Garden Theater throughout the summer, we are pleased to announce that starting this fall, all UFO screenings will be at the Garden Theater (not Frist), and all of the screenings will be free.

USG launches Princeton Textbook Exchange

At the beginning of the Spring 2009 term, the USG created the Textbook Prices Working Group to address the increasing financial burden posed by textbook costs on students. Examination of student use of the “Books” section of the TigerTrade website revealed that many students did not know what TigerTrade was, while others had heard of it but had never used it themselves. A lack of awareness and a not very user-friendly website led to an underutilization of a valuable resource.

In an effort to address these problems, the USG decided to create a new website based on a platform originally developed by students in COS 333. The Princeton Textbook Exchange (PTX) was launched on August 28, 2009.
