2010 USG Senate Ethics and Expectations

We, as members of Princeton’s Undergraduate Student Government, agree to hold each other to the following expectations in order to create a positive atmosphere for working together:

A) Standards for Meetings

  • Email the executive secretary in advance about expected absences
  • Arrive on time
  • Come prepared
  • Maintain professionalism: critique without criticizing
  • Substantiate your opinion
  • Communicate effectively and clearly
  • Keep discussions open and inclusive
  • Be respectful of time; speak succinctly
  • No distractions (laptops, phones, etc.)
  • Follow through on your action items discussed at the meeting

B) Executive Session

  • Anything said during executive session is confidential and off the record
  • All standards of senate meetings are still in effect
  • Executive session should be used judiciously – only when necessary

C) Communications with the Press

  • Don’t belittle others publicly
  • Disagree with opinions, not people
  • Don’t comment anonymously on USG-related articles
  • As a courtesy, notify others on the senate about your responses to the press when those people are involved or mentioned in your answers

D) Internal Communications

  • Respond to emails within 24 hours of send time
  • Complete Doodle polls within 24 hours of send time
  • Use the senate listserv effectively and seriously
  • Write succinctly

E) Elections

  • Avoid personal attacks
  • The president may not make public endorsements

Signed,
